Painting walls and ceilings can seem daunting, but anyone can achieve professional results with the right knowledge and preparation. Before you start painting, consider the type of paint and tools you will need. Choosing the right paint depends on the type of surface you are working on and your expectations of the final result. Focus on such parameters as coverage, performance and ease of application. Brushes, rollers and paint trays are essential tools. Also, remember to protect the floor with a protective film.
Preparing the surface for painting
A crucial step before painting is to prepare the surface properly. Clean the walls and ceilings of dust and dirt. If there are any stains or mold, you must use special products to remove them. If there are holes or uneven areas in the walls, they should be filled and sanded. Check if the surface is dry and free from any moisture that may affect the adhesion of the paint. Priming is another important step in the painting process. It allows the paint to better adhere to the surface and protects it from moisture. Use special primers designed for the types of surfaces you will paint (e.g. ceilings). The primer should be applied evenly with a roller or brush and left to dry.
Using masking tape
To achieve precise lines and avoid contaminating adjacent surfaces, use masking tape. Tape along edges that you want to keep clean – such as baseboards and window frames. Press the tape down firmly to prevent paint from bleeding underneath. Invest in a good quality masking tape that does not leave adhesive residue on the surface when removed. Start painting by applying the first coat of paint. Apply the paint evenly and regularly to avoid streaks or discoloration. A good way to do this is to use a roller with vertical and horizontal movements to form an ‘M’ shape. Once the first coat has been applied, allow the paint to dry –usually for a few hours. However, check the drying time on the paint packaging, as it can vary depending on the type of paint. When the first coat of paint is dry, apply a second coat. You will get better coverage and an even surface appearance. Apply the second coat in a similar way to the first, remembering to spread the paint evenly. When the coat is applied, allow it to dry again.
Painting edges between walls and ceilings
You must properly prepare the surface before painting edges between walls and ceilings. First, clean the walls and ceiling of dust and dirt with a soft brush or cloth. Then, check the surface for holes or irregularities. If there are any, fill them with a suitable putty and wait for them to dry. Before painting, cover the floor with a protective film to keep out dirt and to cover fixtures such as radiators and electrical sockets. Use masking tape to create perfectly straight lines between the wall and the ceiling. Apply it carefully along the edges, trying to keep an even distance from the edge of the ceiling. Press the tape firmly against the surface to prevent paint from bleeding underneath. Also, remember to remove the tape before the paint is completely dry – preferably as soon as the painting is finished. Once the paint has started to dry, gently heat the tape with a hairdryer to make removing it easier.
